Stress can be detrimental to your mental and physical health, however nowadays it seems to be part of everyone’s daily life. By identifying what the key stress symptoms are and by making a few life-style adjustments, you may be able to reduce your stress levels. We are here to help you out!
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF STRESS?
Sometimes it’s difficult to realize a person is stressed out, especially when one is in running around in a “hamster wheel” of daily routine. So what are the signs to look out for to determine whether you need to take a few steps back and relax a bit:
- You are unable to relax (even at home after work)
- You get easily irritated
- You often feel lonely or overwhelmed
- You find it hard to concentrate
- You are constantly worrying
- You are ranting a lot
- You isolate yourself
- You always feel tired
- You often have headaches
If you think you are experiencing more than three of these symptoms, you should consider changing a few things in your life-style.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO BE MORE RELAXED?
When you are stressed out, there is a high probability that you decide to cut back on your essential needs as you may think you don’t have time for it or feel too tired. Essential needs are things such as getting enough sleep, having a healthy diet, or even making time for relaxation. You don’t have to be perfect and it would be counterproductive to stress out about whether or not you did have enough sleep, but being aware that these elements help you feel better is very important on your road to recovery.
- Get loads of ZZZzzs
“A good day starts with a good night’s sleep”. This couldn’t be truer in a period of stress. Try to have between seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Your room should be well ventilated and dark. Making a cozy sanctuary of your bedroom with nice fresh sheets that feel comfortable and welcoming also help relaxing before going to bed.
- Keep moving
Exercise is of great help when it comes to reducing stress. It doesn’t necessarily need to be high intensity training; you can also go for your favorite Pilates class or just go for a walk in the woods with the family (or the dog). The important thing is to stay active.
- Eat healthyily
When stressed, it is very tempting to reach for the biscuit tin and buy ready-made meals out of convenience. However, we recommend you try as much as possible to keep a balanced, healthy diet. You should also make sure to stay well hydrated throughout the day (The European Food Safety Authority recommends a daily water intake of 2.0 litres is considered adequate for women and 2.5 litres for men). By limiting your sugar intake, you will also avoid feeling too sluggish and reduce the risks of cravings later during the day. Try following all these little tips and you should see an improvement very soon.
- Take time for yourself
Taking time for yourself in a stressful period can seem counterintuitive, but it can work wonders. Enjoy a nice bubble bath, get a new haircut or treat yourself to a nice cup of tea with a friend. You need it now more than ever.
All the best!
