What does clean label really mean?

If you’ve happened upon a food, cosmetic, or vitamin advert lately, then you’ve probably noticed the quick shift these industries has taken in prioritizing “clean”. And while it is great that companies are starting to emphasize our health, body and environment, some of us may still be questioning WHAT actually makes a product qualify as clean.

At Modere, clean has always been much more than just a passing trend. We’ve taken a transparent approach from day one—putting our live clean philosophy at the center of everything we do, starting by excluding 1000s of controversial ingredients and upholding greener manufacturing practices. Safe to say, we’re quite the experts when it comes to clean label.

So, if you’re interested in learning more about what it really means to be clean, you’ve come to the right place! Keep on reading to discover what you should look for as a consumer, along with some of our favourite Modere products below:

#1 Ingredient Transparency

Contrary to popular opinion, just because you can’t pronounce an ingredient doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t good for you—and that’s why ingredient transparency is so important. Beneficial ingredients like beneficial bacteria, vitamins, and minerals can often look scary on the label despite the fact that your body needs them to function at its best. For example, L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate and cyanocobalamin might sound like something from a chemistry lab, but they’re highly bioavailable and sustainable sources of vitamins B9 and B12 critical to supporting development, cognitive health and overall wellbeing.

As part of our commitment to transparency, we created the Modere Transparency Trust™. Going well beyond minimum industry requirements, we’ve created detailed transparency charts for some of our bestselling products that list ingredients in plain English, sharing meaningful information about how they’re sourced and the benefits they provide so you can make informed decisions about the products you invite into your home.

#2 Whole Food

When it comes to nutrition supplements, look for a list of ingredients derived from whole, natural sources that haven’t been overprocessed or highly refined. Whole food ingredients are often easy to spot, as they contain words that are commonly recognized and can be bought individually on the shelf. Plant based examples of whole foods include ingredients like apple, spinach, blueberry, pomegranate, turmeric and ginger. Whole foods can also include non-plant-based ingredients like chicken or krill.

#4 Non-GMO 9

GMO has been a hot topic in the nutrition industry for years. Short for genetically modified organism, this industry practice involves altering or bioengineering a plant, organism or even animal in a lab. This is often done to help it withstand certain pests, environmental conditions or diseases—though it’s largely agreed that GMO practices are more far more beneficial to manufacturing companies than to consumers. Some of the most common GMO ingredients include canola oil, soy, corn, potatoes and papaya.

Rich Vanilla Protein Modere Rich Vanilla or Chocolate Protein isn’t just a protein shake–it provides many nutrients your body needs to meet your goals while maintaining proper nutrition. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, this great-tasting, nutritious shake helps you feel fuller throughout the day so you can keep your nutrition goals on track.

#5 Biodegradable

Switching gears to household items, it’s important to bring cleaning products into your home that are good for your family and good for the environment. When stocking up your home with dish soap, laundry detergent or multipurpose cleaner, keep an eye out for labels that claim biodegradable and/or gray water safe. Biodegradable products tend to break down faster and decompose in natural elements without harming the environment, while gray water-safe products allow wastewater to be repurposed and reused to water lawns or wash your car.
